Introduction
Tokyo is full of diversity based on the fusion of tradition and innovation. As a tourism city, Tokyo has been promoting barrier-free environments in order to welcome diverse visitors with different needs. Especially, thanks to Tokyo 2020 Games, accessibility for the disabled in public transportation, accommodation, and tourism facilities has largely increased.
In addition to tangible better accessibility measures, such as renovating facilities, intangible transformation, such as raising interest among people in the concept of better accessibility for the disabled, promotion of understanding of the concept, and facilitation of “mental barrier-free,” has been taking place more widely because the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games attracting attention to para-sports and para-athletes.
The following section will introduce the current status of Tokyo tourism with enhanced accessibility for the disabled, which visitors encounter when traveling in Tokyo, from ‘barrier-free’ efforts that have already become familiar in people’s everyday life in Tokyo to services to improve tourism.
