Daruma – traditional lucky charm

Daruma is a kind of good-luck charm that fulfills people’s wishes and is said to have appeared in the Edo period (1603-1868) The eyes are left intentionally blank white, and people paint one or both eyes while making a wish or setting a specific goal. As one eye is left blank, to be filled in when the wish is granted. The weight in the bottom means that even if it falls over it pops right back up, showing its never give up attitude. While the daruma eyebrows and mustaches are normally painted black, the Happy Daruma for success and victory wishes is a special one painted gold. Since they are all handmade there are no two alike, and each modern daruma is full of its own personality.
